Expanding Your Capacity: Why Convenience Isn't the Answer
We live in a world obsessed with convenience — but if convenience was the answer to happiness, why are anxiety and depression at an all-time high? The real answer lies in expanding your capacity.
We live in a world that's obsessed with convenience. Tap your phone and dinner shows up at your door. Groceries appear in your porch. Entertainment streams instantly without you even having to get off the couch. If a random question or thought pops into our heads, we can Google it and get an answer or more information immediately. No driving or walking down to the library, finding the right book or resource and then digging into it. Our lives are so convenient! Which is amazing right?
Except… if convenience was the answer to happiness, why are anxiety and depression at an all-time high? Why do so many people feel more burned out, restless, and empty than ever before?
I don't think it's a coincidence. Because when everything is designed to be easy, we forget something really important: our capacity.
Nothing really replaces the feeling of working hard at something and accomplishing it. That deep sense of gratification you get when you earn something, when you use that grit God blessed you with—it fills a part of us that convenience simply can't touch. (Queue a parent or grandparent reminding us how they had to walk a mile uphill both ways just to get to school. But honestly? They weren't wrong.)
The Window of Tolerance
There's this idea in psychology called the window of tolerance. Think of it like the space you have to deal with life without losing your cool or shutting down. Inside that window, you can think clearly, regulate your emotions, and actually feel like yourself.
But here's the catch—you don't grow your window by avoiding hard things. You grow it by gently leaning into challenges, building resilience, and training your nervous system to handle more without freaking out.
That feeling of finishing a workout you didn't want to do? Or finally tackling a tough project you've been procrastinating on? Being able to stay present through an uncomfortable conversation or through a craving. That's your window expanding. That's your system saying, "See? You can hold more than you thought." Such a great feeling indeed.
That feeling is the exact opposite of the emptiness we get from scrolling our phones or avoiding the stuff we know matters.
Why Grit Feels So Good
That little spark inside that lights up when we persevere, endure, and push through something hard. It's deeply satisfying to know you did that. You didn't avoid it. You didn't numb out. You showed up.
And that's not just a "feel good" thing. Research shows people who challenge themselves and build resilience are actually happier and healthier long-term. Meanwhile, always chasing the "easy" route leaves us anxious, restless, and unfulfilled.
It's common for people to come to me for hypnosis hoping for the magic easy button that makes them love carrots and hate cake, or simply never think of a cigarette again.
"Can you just make me stop smoking?" "Can you hypnotize me to lose weight without trying?"
I totally get it—I wish it worked that way too. But hypnosis isn't a brain switch I can flip. What it is, is a way to help you see clearly: your patterns, your why, and what's actually been holding you back.
And once you see those things, you can start to build the capacity to move forward. Suddenly the "hard" work doesn't feel impossible—it feels doable. And that path to your goals was there all along, just hidden under the noise.
The Junk Drawer
I like to explain it like this: imagine you've got a junk drawer. You really need the scissors, but the drawer is such a mess you avoid opening it. It still technically works—it opens and closes, it holds stuff—but finding what you need feels impossible. And the longer you avoid it, the messier it gets.
That's a lot like the mind. Hypnosis is like dumping the drawer out, sorting through the mess, and putting it back in a way that makes sense. It still takes rolling up your sleeves to clean it out, but once you do, you've not only got your scissors back—you've also got order, clarity, and maybe even some space for new things you actually want in there.
The drawer is still yours. The scissors were always in there. You just needed the space and clarity to find them again.
Everything worthwhile takes effort. Relationships. Health. Growth. Purpose.
The good news is—you're capable of more than you think. Hypnosis just gives you the clarity and nervous system support to expand your capacity, regulate your emotions, and actually follow through without constantly burning out.
When your inner world is steady, discipline stops feeling like punishment and starts feeling like self-respect. And those hard things you used to avoid become the very things that make life richer, deeper, and way more meaningful.
Convenience has its place. Don't get me wrong—I love two-day shipping as much as the next person. But it will never replace the deep fulfillment of showing up, doing the work, and knowing you had the grit to follow through.
You don't need an easy button. You need tools to uncover the strength that's already inside you. And trust me—you have way more capacity than you realize.
